Baking with Weeds and Seeds Workshop

Gluten-free foods are all the rage, but long before the trend caught on our ancestors were using "weeds," seeds, and nuts to make nutritious and delicious breads and pancakes on the fire. In this workshop, we’ll discuss the nutritional and medicinal properties of some of the plants and seeds we can find in our bioregion, including acorns, curly dock, wild oats and even dried greens. We’ll also talk about how to process and use those plants to make flour that can be turned into your favorite gluten-free (or reduced gluten) snacks. We will also bake a loaf of crusty bread from start to finish, and towards the end of our time together, we'll share a communal meal of homemade bread, plant-based spread, and soup. The workshop officially ends at 6, but we can continue socializing afterwards for those who are interested. To reserve your space, pay online here (cost $20).

Ancient Brewing: How to Brew Herbal Beer (Gruit)

  • Buena Vista, CO, 81211 United States (map)

Fermentation is a useful way to preserve fruits and herbs, and brewing beer is just one of many ways to ferment. Long before IPAs and lagers dominated the market, a wide array of fruits, flowers, and herbs were used to make beer—before the extensive use of hops, bitter plants such as mugwort and dandelion were used as flavorings. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to brew with medicinal and sacred plants and fruits. Making your own brew is fun, and much easier than you might imagine! If you want to learn more, please join me for this 2-hour brewing workshop. We’ll turn locally available plants and “weeds” into tasty herbal beer known as gruit.
